The power of now – Eckhart Tolle
This book was recommended by my late best friend Charlie Gall. Charles’s addictions were in fact a massive contributing factor to his death. He was always trying to escape reality and it is just a shame he didn’t internalize Tolle a little more.
Tolle speaks of thought or ego as an out of control side of brain that we have mistakenly identified with as our consciousness. He goes on to say that thought is necessary for functioning in life but should only be used to complete and plan for tasks.
He says we live in our mind rather than in the present moment. We are either reliving past events or creating false realities in the future.
For Charles the demon was anxiety and in the book Tolle describes just what a futile waste of effort anxiety is. The outcome of things to come are totally beyond the control of the individual and in most cases the outcome is different to the feared outcome.
He also says correctly I think that the doing of dealing with any issue is never as frightening as the thought.
The aim is to be free of thought and use it only when required.
An awesome book that can be totally life changing. I imagine a lot will get lost toward the end of the book as he takes the philosophy in to the spiritual in a big way but I still enjoyed it.
Wish I could have chatted with my pal about this amazing read….Miss you horse x
